Somerset - On October the 8th, 2025 the Honorable Judge Walter Flippin Maguire, Sr. passed from this world into the arms of our Heavenly Father.
He was born on May 17, 1943 in Lexington, Kentucky and was reared in Somerset, Kentucky. He graduated from Somerset High School Class of 1961, the University of Kentucky, the University of Kentucky Law School and the National Judicial College. He was the co-captain of his high school football team and attended the University of Kentucky on a track scholarship where he held multiple records for many years in the 300 hurdles and mile relay. Walter was a dedicated athlete in both high school and college. Because of his athletic abilities, he was later inducted into the Somerset High School Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the Kentucky Track & Cross-Country Coaches Association. During his years in UK Law School, he was the Assistant Track Coach. He served at the University of Kentucky as Assistant to the Vice President of Student Affairs and as Associate Dean of Students.
Walter was a member of the Pulaski County and Kentucky Bar Associations. He went on to be elected one of Kentucky's original District Judges and helped organize the first 28th District Court in 1978. He served his community with dedication as District and Family Court Judge until his retirement in 2014. As a judge, Walter was respected by the community and his colleagues and had an unwavering reputation for his fairness and integrity. In his personal life, Walter was kindhearted, generous, compassionate and admired by many people. He was well known for his love of animals. He enjoyed visiting with his dear friends and spending time at his farm. His passion and love for the well-being of our country, the constitution and the law were noteworthy. When asked how he would like to be remembered, his response was "I loved my family, I made a difference and I was co-captain of my football team."
Besides his parents; John Drummond Maguire and Ethelberta Flippin Maguire, he is preceded in death by a brother; James John "Jim" Maguire and his very dear Aunts; Mary Susan Mewborn and Ruth Flippin Isenbarger.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 57 years; Jane Williams Maguire of Somerset, his son; Walter Flippin (Dustie) Maguire, Jr., and two daughters; Mary Susan (Kevin) Wallace and Ann Louise Maguire (Michael) Saich all of Somerset, a brother; Phillip Royce Maguire of Pensacola, Florida, six grandchildren; Andrea (Mark) Williams, Alyssa Claire Richardson, Daniel Morris Richardson, Hana Juliet Saich, Sophia Miren Maguire and Stella Flippin Maguire, a bonus granddaughter, Margaret Claire Saich, three great-grandchildren; Miles Grey, Max Fisher and Mercer Maguire Williams and one sister-in-law; Claudia Ann Hayes of Inez, Kentucky as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, October 13, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church, 99 South Central Avenue in Somerset. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at the Church with Pastor Todd Smith and Bro. Mark Eubank Officiating.
A private inurnment will be in the Somerset City Cemetery at a later date.
