Somerset - Bobbie J. Hughes, son of the late Hubert and Harriet Hill Hughes, was born in Sloans Valley, Kentucky on July 21, 1928. He departed this life on November 29, 2025, at the age of 97.

Bobbie left high school to enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he attended Ferguson High School where he was a star basketball player. It was there he met Dorothy, his future bride, and the love of his life.

Bobbie was employed with South Kentucky RECC in 1957 in the construction department. After becoming a lineman, he transferred to the Albany branch office in Clinton County as a serviceman. He was promoted to Operations Chief of the Albany branch office in 1976. In 1977 he transferred back to Somerset to assume the position of Right of Way Superintendent. Having spent 28 years working to keep the lights on for RECC customers in this area, Bobbie retired on January 4, 1985.

Bobbie was a devout Christian, serving as Sunday School teacher, song leader and faithful member of several Baptist churches. He was a gifted entertainer who loved singing, playing guitar and telling jokes. As a member of The Travelers Gospel Quartet during the mid-1960's Bobbie performed at churches throughout the region as well as on a weekly radio show on radio station WANY in Albany, Kentucky. Upon returning to Somerset, Bobbie continued his love for entertaining, with the Beacon Hill Baptist Church Beaconaires Sympathy Band, performing in nursing homes and churches throughout the area.

Bobbie loved raising and training hunting dogs and was an avid bird and rabbit hunter. He was a true big blue UK basketball fan.

He was loved and admired by all who knew him for his cheerful outgoing personality and wonderful sense of humor.
