Shirley's Story

Text size

Mrs. Shirley Ann Wright, age 66, of Somerset, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in Port Charlotte, Florida.
She was born September 2, 1950 in Oneida, Kentucky, daughter of the late Leonard Stephens and the late Thelma Barton Stephens.
From a young age, Shirley was a highly energetic girl whom was tomboyish and enjoyed the outdoors. She was fun loving, liked to make people smile or laugh and made friends easily. While in high school, Shirley was on the swim team where she was asked to try out for the Olympic Swim Team. Shirley won many awards for the speeches that she gave during her years in high school. In 1970 she found her soul mate and partner for life and married Bruce Wright. Soon after they had a family and Shirley began a career in Real Estate. She quickly became a prominent member of the community, ran in elections, and was voted Woman of the Year in the Business Professional Women's Club of Somerset. Mrs. Wright was also voted the Republican Precinct Chair Person and the Youth Chairman for Republicans.
Mrs. Wright was a member of the Whitley City Methodist Church. She was a devout Christian woman who loved the Lord. Her witness for His glory by having experienced the truth of the Heavens that has been prepared for his children touched the lives and hearts of those she met.
Up through the years, Shirley was much like a big sister to so many. She helped with toy drives at Christmas and felt that every child should have a pair of shoes. Many times, she would go out of her way to fulfil the needs of children when she saw a child without shoes.
However, Shirley's biggest and proudest accomplishment in life was her family. She was a very dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished time with her family weather it was playing in the pool, going places together, doing crafts, going fishing, or simply listening, giving advice, or giving hugs out. Mrs. Wright was the center of the family and she will be dearly missed by all of her family.
Shirley struggled with many illnesses over the last six years until her heart just couldn't take it any longer. However, without the help of the many doctors, surgeons, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and the prayers from the community and churches, we would not have had the last six years with Shirley.
From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank each and every one of you for helping us have our wife, mother, and grandmother for the last six precious years. Those years have meant more to us than words could express.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests for you to pay it forward to a friend, stranger, or family member by giving them a gift and making their day bright.
She is survived by her husband; Bruce Wright, whom she united into marriage on June 5, 1970 in Jamestown, Tennessee, one son; Stephen (Xilan) Wright of Richmond, Kentucky, one daughter; Malissa Wright of Somerset, Kentucky, one brother; Barton (Brenda) Stephens of Madisonville, Kentucky, four grandchildren; Majenta Mootoor, Vinache Mootoor, Alysha Mootoor and Michelle Wright; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Leonard and Thelma Barton Stephens.
