William Ray (Billy) Hargis passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at VA Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky at the age of 78.
"Poppy" Bill was born on June 27, 1939 at Ula, Kentucky to the late Mitchell and Mary Woodall Hargis. He is preceded in death by one brother, Dorwin Hargis.
He is survived by a very special friend, Brenda Thompson of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; one daughter, Anissa Rae Hargis and (Mark) Noderer and grandchildren, Charles William, Lilly Rose and Emma Madrew of LaGrange, Kentucky. He was blessed to be a second father to Bridgette Thompson Lile and second grandfather to Hannah and (Derek, USN) Butcher and Andrew Lile.
He is also survived by three sisters, Ruby Barnes, Faye Vaught and Lou and (Marvin) Phillips of Somerset, Kentucky and one brother Don and (Martha) Hargis of Lexington, Kentucky; 12 nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.
He was a 5 year veteran of the US Air Force, serving 1 year on the DEW LINE NORAD (Distant Early Warning North American Air Defense) Command, Keflavick, Iceland and worked Civilian Service for the US Army for 41 years retiring in 2006.
He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church Lexington, KY.
Visitation will be Monday, October 9, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company & Crematory.
Memorial service for Billy Hargis will be Monday, October 9, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company & Crematory with Brother Troy Merrick officiating.
Interment will be at a later date at Mill Springs National Cemetery at Nancy, Kentucky.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations made to Whetstone Cemetery Fund.
