Ruth Sewell of Somerset, KY, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017. She was born in the Plato-Vanhook Community February 10, 1924, the daughter of John and Daisy McKinney Bullock. She was a graduate of Shopville High School and Rogers School of Business. After graduation she worked at UniVis Lens in Dayton, Ohio. She was married to Howard Sewell. They lived and worked in Dayton, Ohio until 1946, when they returned to Somerset. Ruth was a homemaker and later worked several years at United Department Store.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a special second mother, Sophia Glasgow Bullock who came in her life after her birth mother died, one sister Edna Harris, two step sisters, Bea Noe and Lura Carter, six brothers, Paris, J.T., Howard, Paul,Denver and John Bullock, Jr. her husband Howard Sewell and one daughter, Terry Wright. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Erma Sewell, and one son, Gordon Sewell, one granddaughter, Jana Wright, two great grandchildren, Zachary Ditto and Jasmine Ditto. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Glenda Massey.
Ruth loved backyard bird watching. The feeders were filled every day, rain or shine. She was a talented seamstress, a great cook and loved having friends and family around her table. She enjoyed decorating for every holiday and her beautiful Christmas trees were something special. She was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church for over 60 yrs, serving in many capacities and attending, as long as she was able. Ruth leaves behind a legacy of strength, hospitality and a compassionate spirit.
A service honoring the life of Ruth Sewell will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory with Brothers Jamie Epperson and Gilbert Robinson officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Bobbitt Cemetery.
