Ruby Francis Tanner Whitaker, age 84, of Somerset, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018, at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.
Ruby was born on January 29, 1933, in East Somerset, daughter of Shelby Green and Mary Lou Fisher Tanner. She married William Edward "Bill" Whitaker on December 17, 1954, in Somerset. Ruby owned and operated Whitaker's Grocery, also known as the Dallas Grocery, for 22 years. She worked for Roses Department Store as a teenager, and in later years, for the Palm Beach Company, of Somerset. After selling her store, Ruby quilted and crocheted for people for years. She was the Republican chairwoman for the Dallas precinct of Pulaski County and was a Pulaski County Colonel. Ruby was a long-time member of the Cedar Gap Church of God.
She is survived by her son, Edward M. Whitaker (Krista Beasley), of Lexington; her daughter, Donna F. Whitaker Bullock (Jackie), of Somerset; her grandchildren, Travis M. Bullock (Summer Smith) and Amber L. Bullock Brown (Micah); and her great-grandchildren, Allison and Julie Bullock and Hunter and Laura Brown.
Ruby is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and her daughter, Mary Shannon Whitaker.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 25, 2018, after 5:00 p.m., in the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company.
A Celebration of the Life of Ruby Francis Tanner Whitaker will be held Friday, January 26, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in the Renfro Cemetery, in the Dahl Community.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Renfro Cemetery Fund, 501 Dahl-Vanhook Road, Somerset, KY 42501.
