Mary's Story

Mary Barbara Irene Durant Johnson, 70, of Somerset, KY and formerly of Orlando, FL died peacefully on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, FL.

Mary was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all who knew her, but her Greatest Blessings call her Memaw.

She is preceded in death by her Loving Husband of 46 years, Ernest Ray Johnson; Parents, Eliot and Gertrude Durant; Sister, Trudy Buchtel; Brother, John Durant; infant Niece, Karen Ernst; and lifelong friend, Shirley Bryan.

Mary was born on November 5, 1947 in Chelsea, MA. She grew up in Weymouth, MA; moved to Westminster, CA; and then moved to Titusville, FL where she met the love of her life, Ernest (Ernie) Ray Johnson. They were married on September 21, 1968 in Titusville, FL, where Mary began her career in banking. The family moved to Orlando, FL in 1971 where she continued working until retiring from First Union National Bank after more than 30 years of service. She then later moved to Greeneville, TN and lastly, Somerset, KY.

Between work and babysitting, alongside her husband, you were likely to find her playing bingo, singing karaoke or enjoying good food and friends at their local VFW, Eagles or Moose Lodge. Mary achieved the position of Senior Regent with The Women of the Moose #1917 through Pine Castle Moose Lodge #2345 and later transferred her membership to Azalea Park Moose Lodge #2591. She was always happy to volunteer and actively helped with functions and fundraisers in the community, for Mooseheart and Moosehaven or wherever she was needed. She also had a love for bowling and throughout the years bowled on various teams at Aloma Bowling Alley where she was also the league treasurer.

Mary is survived by her children, John Anthony Durant (Misti) of Blountville, TN and Donna Sue Ann Johnson Madden (Jeff) of Somerset, KY;

Ten grandchildren, Amber Rundell of Orlando, FL; Ashley Madden of Apopka, FL; Andrew Rundell (Apsorn) of Orlando, FL; Jessica Madden of Eustis, FL; Marc Durant (Brandy) of Deltona, FL; Kyle Madden of Haughton, LA; Kevin Durant of Greeneville, TN; Brittany Madden of Haughton, LA; Jeremy Durant of Afton, TN; and Jeffrey Madden of Somerset, KY;

Eight great grandchildren, Ethan, Joshua, Elijah, Brylee, Ema, Ansorn, Emytt and Andon.

Mary is also survived by nephews, Daniel Ernst, Ronald Ernst, Norman Warren (Amanda) and Wayne Warren; nieces, Tara Warren, Julie McBrien (Keith) and Gladys Duncan; great nephews, Swan Duncan and Joel Shapiro; great nieces Amy Campbell, Stephanie Hogsten (Bobby) and Allison Ott; great great nephew Kory; and great great nieces Katy, Kinsley and baby Nora; Brother-in-Law Gilbert Buchtel; along with other family members and friends who will miss her dearly including her fur babies Snoopy & Woody.

DeGusipe Funeral Home, Orlando, FL, entrusted with her Cremation.

A private ceremony will be held for family at Bethlehem Cemetery in Lebanon, TN.

Her daughter would like to give special thanks to Hospice of the Comforter for their care and compassion during this difficult time; and to both Dr. Stanton Cole and Bob Archer of WeCare Medical for their excellent care and services, kindness and generosity.
