Marjorie Carter (Dupree) Simmons, 92, of Lady Lake, Fl., passed away on July 28, 2019.
She was born Dec. 7, 1926, in Birmingham, Alabama to parents, Willie Zell (Carter) and John Keith Dupree.
Marjorie (Marty) graduated from Woodlawn High School in Birmingham in 1944. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps and trained at Norwood Hospital/Caraway Methodist Memorial and graduated as an RN in 1947. It was there that she met John W. Simmons who was completing his medical internship. They were married on July 15, 1948, in Birmingham at East Lake Methodist Church and moved to Monticello, Kentucky, John's hometown.
Marty and John had 3 children, Susan Hughes (Chuck) of Louisville, Ky., Jan Edmondson (Mark, deceased) of The Villages, FL., and John Keith Simmons (deceased). Also surviving are three grandchildren, Michael (Karen) Bohnenkamp, Sarah and David Hughes. She leaves behind to cherish her memory a niece, Bobbie (Tim) Simmons Picard, nephew Thomas G. (Mikki) Simmons and cousins Nellie Palangio, Charles (Bonnie) Carter and Sallie Carter. Preceding her in death are her parents, husband John and son, John Keith.
Marty had a very rewarding nursing career. She worked at the Monticello Clinic Hospital, the Wayne County Health Department, taught in the Wayne County Vocational School and then retired in 1997 as an RN at the Lake Cumberland Boys Camp.
She was active in the Air Force Officers Wives Club and the German American Club while stationed in Germany. She enjoyed being a member of the Jr. Woman's Club of Monticello and was a member of the Nicholas Mercer Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution and the Red Hat Society. For over 50 years, she was a member of the Monticello First Christian Church and attended New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages, FL.
She moved to Oxford, Fl. in 2009 and enjoyed playing bridge, making jewelry, cardmaking and the Red Hat Society. She was always helping others in her independent living community. She was very talented in needlepoint and crewel embroidery and enjoyed swimming.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 2 pm at the Hicks Vaughn Funeral Home Chapel in Monticello, Ky. The family will receive visitors from 12 pm to 2 pm prior to the service. Interment will be in the Elk Spring Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, Building Fund, 100 Michigan Ave., Monticello, Ky. 42633.
