William Clyde Ping, age 97, of Somerset, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Clyde was born on September 23, 1920, in Somerset, son of Wallace and Robbie Capps Ping. He was a graduate of the Somerset High School Class of 1940. While in high school, Clyde had worked for Ledford Grocery as a butcher. He served during World War II, as a Patrol Torpedo Boat Gunner in the South Pacific, from 1942 until 1945. After his service in the U.S. Navy, Clyde returned to Somerset as an employee for M.L. Gover Company. He married Mary Belle Gregory on March 27, 1949.
Clyde opened Clyde's Mens Shop in the original East Mount Vernon Street location next to the Virginia Cinema. He later moved the shop location to North Main Street, in what is now Anderson Office Supply. For a short time, Clyde was the manager of The Corral clothing shop in the Tradewinds Shopping Center. He then opened Clyde's Mens and Womens Apparel, which he owned and operated until his retirement.
He was a long devoted, loving member of First Baptist Church of Somerset, where through the years, he held posts on many committees, taught Sunday School and served as deacon. Clyde also served as a board member for the Somerset Independent School District.
Clyde loved traveling and being around people. One of the most important things in life for Clyde was that his wife and daughter were provided for.
He is survived by his daughter, Amy Maurer (Michael), of Nacogdoches, TX; and his sister, Verna "Bun" Pickup (Edward), of Somerset.
Preceding Clyde in death are his parents; his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Belle; his brothers, Robert "Bob" Ping and Joe Ed Ping; and his sisters, Jean Denney and Anna Jane Claunch Massey.
